Brick Calculator

Calculate the number of bricks needed for a wall based on dimensions and mortar thickness.

Whether you are building a garden wall, a boundary fence, or a full masonry structure, knowing how many bricks to order prevents waste and saves money.

The calculation divides the total wall area by the face area of a single brick plus its mortar joint. A standard metric brick measures 215 mm long by 65 mm high, with a 10 mm mortar joint on all sides. This gives approximately 60 bricks per square meter for a single-skin wall in stretcher bond.

For double-skin (cavity) walls, double the result. Always add 5–10% extra for breakage, cuts around openings, and waste. Different brick sizes — such as modular (194 x 92 mm) or king-size (295 x 90 mm) — will change the count significantly, so always enter the actual dimensions of your chosen brick.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks per square meter?
With a standard 215 x 65 mm brick and 10 mm mortar joints, you need approximately 60 bricks per square meter for a single-skin wall.
Should I include mortar joints in the calculation?
Yes. Mortar joints (typically 10 mm) increase the effective size of each brick course, reducing the total number needed. This calculator accounts for mortar automatically.
How much extra should I order?
Order 5–10% more bricks than calculated to account for cuts, breakage during transport, and damaged units.
