Torque (or moment of force) is the rotational equivalent of linear force. It measures how effectively a force causes rotation about a pivot point. The formula is: Torque = Force x Distance x sin(angle).

When the force is applied perpendicular to the lever arm (90 degrees), torque is maximized. At any other angle, only the perpendicular component of the force contributes, hence the sine term. Pushing a door at its edge (maximum distance) is easier than pushing near the hinge.

Torque is measured in Newton-meters (Nm) in the metric system and foot-pounds (ft-lb) in the imperial system. It is critical in automotive engineering (engine torque), mechanical design (bolt tightening specifications), and structural engineering (beam analysis). A typical car engine produces 200–400 Nm of torque.

Why does angle matter?

How do I convert Nm to ft-lb?
Divide Nm by 1.35582. For example, 100 Nm equals approximately 73.76 ft-lb.
